LIVE NOW!!

Defiance

The Protectors #9
By Sloane Kennedy
  Hosted by Jo&Isalovebooks Blog

SYNOPSIS

All I ever wanted was to serve and protect my country. It ended up costing me everything…

At 49, Vincent St. James has learned to live with the choices he’s made, even if he isn’t always proud of them. After the military he was practically born into decided his sexuality was more important than his impeccable service record, Vincent lost everything, including the man he’d planned to spend the rest of his life with.

And a man with nothing to live for has nothing to lose.

With a bone deep hatred of all things government, Vincent found another way to serve his country, but it too came at a steep cost that he never could have foreseen. Dealing in secrets and death means there’s always someone waiting around the next corner trying to either take his place or bury their secrets along with his body. Even if he wanted out, it’s far too late for that.

When he’s given the chance to help out a friend who once had his back when others didn’t, he jumps at the chance to repay the favor. Even if it means protecting the kind of man he despises most…a power-hungry politician looking to push his own agenda on an unsuspecting public.

I made a terrible choice three years ago and it cost me the only person who ever really mattered to me. But maybe there’s another way I can make things right…

30-year-old Nathan Wilder can’t take back the moment he betrayed his twin brother, but he can try to make sure that the legacy of hate that drove him to turn on Brody never has a chance to rear its ugly head again. And if that means going against his powerful father’s right-wing political constituency in a down and dirty race for a seat in the U.S. Senate, then so be it. But when the threats that had been limited to harmless emails start taking an uglier turn, culminating in a violent attack that leaves no doubt as to the assailant’s intent, Nathan is thrown into the direct path of a mysterious and dangerous man who may end up forcing Nathan to confront truths he just isn’t ready to face yet.

Protecting him was supposed to be a favor for a friend and nothing more. Once he’s safe, I’ll let him go. I have to…

Protecting Nathan was supposed to be a walk in the park for a guy like Vincent. But nothing about the younger man is what he’d been expecting, especially the long-dead feelings Nathan stirs in him.

The feelings that aren’t just about protection.

Which is a problem, because while the threat against Nathan is temporary, the danger that’s become a way of life for Vincent is just waiting for the next thing it can take from him. Caring about someone means painting a target on their back and Vincent is done losing people he loves.

But letting Nathan go may not be as easy at seems…especially when Nathan decides to finally stand up and fight for what…and who he truly wants.

My Review

I never seem to get enough!

I received an ARC of this book for the purpose of my honest opinion. All opinions are my own and I have received no compensation.

I absolutely love this series and the other series that ties all these characters together. I really enjoy how they all seem to pop up in each other's books. Vincent has such a tragic past of love and loss that made my heart hurt for him. I wanted to hug him and just be his friend. Nathan, poor thing, due to his upbringing he doesn't even know who he really is at first. I really enjoyed them coming together the way they did with all the drama and danger surrounding them. There was also some fun moments. We met some new characters that I am anxious to see in future books sooner rather than later lol. Overall I loved this book. Total winner here.

Favorite Quote: “Stay calm. The assailant is about twelve inches tall with buck teeth, but he’s got a pretty sizeable set of ears on him so he can probably hear us.”

EXCERPT

As I was tucking my phone into my pocket, I saw Nathan grab his off the floor.
When he went to put it in his shirt pocket, I shook my head and said, “No, that stays here.”
“I need my phone,” Nathan said.
“You need it more than you need to breathe?” I asked impatiently. “Because it’s traceable.” I reached for it to take it away from him, but he stepped back. I got into his space and ripped the phone from his hand. “Is your career really more important than your life?” I ground out. “Because it sure as shit isn’t more important than mine.” I dropped the phone to the floor and made a move to crush it under my heel, but Nathan suddenly lunged forward.
“Don’t!” he yelled. My instincts took over and I grabbed him by the arms and swept his legs from underneath him, taking us both to the floor. He let out a whoosh of air as my body crashed down on his. Too late, I remembered the way he’d been holding his side after the earlier attack.
But I didn’t apologize.
“You lay your hands on me one more time-”
“My brother’s messages!” Nathan shouted, his voice thick with emotion.
“What?” I asked, startled.
Nathan drew in several breaths. “I want the phone because it has my brother’s voicemail messages on it,” he whispered. His whiskey-colored eyes met mine. “Please,” he murmured.
I suddenly became very aware of his hard body sprawled beneath mine. During the scuffle, one of my legs had gotten wedged between his, putting our cocks precariously close to one another. I had his hands pinned to the floor and I could feel his body trembling beneath mine.
I knew it was likely just the lingering shock, but I couldn’t deny what having him completely at my mercy was doing to me. Especially since he wasn’t fighting me. I hadn’t given much thought to whether or not Nathan was gay like his brother, but I sure as shit was thinking about it now.
“Please,” Nathan repeated, and a perverse part of me wondered what he was actually asking me for. I knew I needed to get off him, but I found myself reluctant to move. Nathan’s fingers flexed, drawing my gaze to them. It would be so easy to move my hands up to link my fingers with his. I shifted slightly to take the pressure off the knee that I had wedged between his legs, but the move caused my dick to brush his. I jerked my eyes to Nathan’s when I heard him let out the tiniest of whimpers.
“Let me up,” he suddenly said, and then he was pushing at me. I could have easily kept him there on the floor like that and taken what I wanted…a taste of him. But I shifted off him instead and then snatched his phone off the floor. Nathan struggled to his feet, but didn’t try to grab the phone again.
My brain told my fingers to drop the damn thing so I could crush it, because anything less wasn’t safe. But my body disobeyed the order and instead, I turned the phone off and handed it to Nathan. “Leave it off.”
I turned to head towards the hallway leading to the front door, but stopped when Nathan said, “Wait.”
I forced myself to turn around. “What?”
“I don’t even know your name.”
There were a million things I could have said to him, none of which included actually giving him my name. Just like with the phone, it wasn’t safe for him to know who I was.
“Vincent,” I said.
“Vincent,” Nathan murmured, more to himself than anything else. “Thank you, Vincent.”
I didn’t want his thanks. I didn’t want anything from him except to eliminate the threat against him and then get the hell away from him.
“Let’s go,” was all I said, though, and then I turned away, not really caring if he followed.

My Review

***I received an ARC of this book for the purpose of my honest opinion.  All opinions are my own. ***

After reading The Silver Swan I had so many freaking questions and I was so confused in so many ways lol. All I knew was that I had to find out wtf was glingv on with this chick and these crazy games and strangely sexy guys.

Having now read The Broken Puppet a lot of questions were answered ONLY TO GIVE ME MORE FREAKING QUESTIONS lmao!!! I can say without a doubt this author is incredible in a twisted and dark type of way, but I totally love it.

I am so curious as to what is going to happen next I am already going crazy waiting for the next installment.

Bought and Paid For by Jordan Marie and Jenika Snow

He wanted my virginity.

He wanted to own me.

I just wanted to be his.

Jackson

I wanted Megan from the moment I first saw her, and nothing would keep me from her.

I could have been called a bastard for knowing her father would fail in paying me for a mutual business agreement, for knowing I would take Megan as payment.

But she was mine and in my world, when I wanted something, I took it. And I wanted her.

She was bought and paid for, collateral damage when her father failed to uphold his end of the deal.

They all think it’s only for a week. They’re wrong.

I’m keeping her.

Megan

My father couldn't fulfill a debt to Jackson King, but Jackson didn't seem to mind, not when he got me as his payment.

Having been attracted to the brutal businessman for years, I couldn't help but feel arousal and trepidation at what he had planned. He wanted me for a week, to do with as he pleased.

He wanted my virginity.

But I knew this was more than just repaying a debt. This was about Jackson wanting to own me, not just my body, but every part of who I was.

And the depraved part about it all was the fact that I wanted to give everything to him.

I wanted to be his.

WARNING:  This is fast and hard ride, featuring an over-the-top Alpha who fights dirty and plays dirtier. It’s a safe read, but it’s short, filthy and so hot you might need a nice, big, long, cool…drink to get you through to the happy ending.

Megan

My heart was thundering, my palms sweating. I looked between my father and the man who was claiming he now owned me. I stared at my father, pissed that he would get himself into the situation, that he always seemed to fuck up on the most monumental levels.
He wouldn't even look at me and I knew it was because he realized how bad the situation really was. With his head downcast, his gaze refusing to meet mine, I could do nothing but want to lash out at him, hurt him in the way he was hurting me right now.
I knew in that moment that he would let Jackson King take me, own my body... fuck me.
“I'm not some piece of fucking property,” I almost screamed out. Tears of anger raced down my cheeks, and I felt my face heat.
And then, looking calm, collected, and like he had all the time in the world, Jackson King stared directly into my eyes and smiled. His grin had a chill racing up my spine, this cold sweat covering me, and I knew I should've been afraid instead of aroused.
Jackson King was older, hell, no doubt two decades older than my own twenty-one years, with a headful of short silver and grey hair, and a beard that screamed all man. His body was big, strong, muscular, and despite the situation, he made me feel very feminine.
“Your father owes a debt, and without any funds or any collateral to make up the loss, you're what I'll be taking as his payment.” He said those words as if the deal was already done, as if I had no choice in the matter.
I didn’t know what my father had done, or why this was happening, but I knew I’d find out eventually.
Forget the fact that I’d wanted Jackson King for longer than I could remember. I didn’t “know” him, but he’d been doing business with my father for years, and I knew enough about him through the media that it was like he’d always been in my life.
I could have snorted at the fact that I would assume to know who Jackson King was.
Ever since my father started doing business with him, I’d been fascinated by the man behind the three-piece suits and the billion dollar company. I knew he was ruthless in his endeavors, and that what he wanted, he took.
I just didn't think I would be the object of his taking.
I clenched my teeth together, my anger rising, my annoyance taking over. I stared right in his eyes, not about to back down no matter how intimidating he was.
“You can't make me go with you.” I felt pride over actually saying the words and knowing I had power too. “I’m not some piece of property you can own.” But the smirk he gave me, that arrogant, all-knowing expression, had this cold feeling rushing over me.
He took a step closer but I held my ground, refusing to back down. He might be powerful in the boardroom, maybe even dominate and dictate to everyone around him, but in this instance I would not bend.
I would not submit.
And when he reached out and tipped my head back with his finger under my chin, I knew there was something inherently wrong with me. The feeling of his flesh on mine, even that small touch, had me instantly wet. I felt my nipples beading, and my inner muscles clenching painfully.
He smiled wider, flashing straight white teeth, but it was more of a predatory expression, one that told me he knew he would get exactly what he wanted no matter what.
“That's where you're wrong, Megan.” He ran his thumb along my jawline, eliciting a shiver along my arms. “You'll give me what I want because you love your father, you don’t want to see him desolate and broken, and also because...” He leaned in closer so our faces were only inches apart. The scent of his cologne was addicting, and filled my head, making me dizzy, drunk from it all. “You’ll come with me because you want me as much as I want you.”
And just like that, after he spoke those words—those very true words—I knew I would do whatever he said.

My Review

***I received an ARC of this book from the author for the purpose of my honest opinion. ***

I loved how rough and sexy Jackson is. How he can make your toes curl just with a sexy growl and I really enjoyed watching him chase his prey like a predator.

The story was really short and to the point, so if you don't like sexy alpha men taking what they want then you really should avoid the book, but if you like them almost nasty then read away lol.

I'm rating it four stars and cannot wait for more sexy men taking what they want!
